To track elusive wildlife like clouded leopards and red pandas, Arunachal Pradesh’s Forest Department has installed solar-powered camera traps in Namdapha and Pakke sanctuaries. These camera traps, developed by IIT Guwahati, can operate for months without human intervention. The images are AI-tagged to identify species and detect poachers. Local forest guards are trained to retrieve and analyze data. The new system has already captured footage of rare pheasants and nocturnal animals. The success could help establish better ecological corridors across the Eastern Himalayas.
